Through the Pack at
Glenfield
The Queen of Clubs
|
In this deal from the Glenfield Club Pairs of 14th
August 2002 I was the only honour card in my partner’s hand. Yet she came under such pressure in the
discards that I was unable to take a trick. |

West
opened one
heart. North overcalled two clubs, my owner passed and south bid two no
trumps. West passed and north closed
the auction with a bid of three no trumps.
West chose to lead the ten of hearts (any other suit would have been
better and perhaps a spade was indicated by the bidding). The queen took the first trick
and declarer set about the spades.
West won the third round by which time my owner had had to discard a
diamond and a club. West then played
a second heart (any other suit would have been better and perhaps a spade was
indicated by the bidding). Declarer
won the jack of hearts and tried a diamond to the ace. When the queen dropped declarer had eleven
top tricks in the bag and proceeded to cash the queen of spades. My owner could throw a small club on this
but then declarer led a diamond to the jack and played the ace of hearts. My owner had no answer to this. Another diamond discard would set up
south’s diamonds while a club discard meant that I would drop harmlessly
under dummy’s king. My
owner was completely innocent in the play; all she did was follow suit, yet
she was condemned to a bottom. All
pairs bar one bid the north south cards to three no trumps but my owner’s
opponents were the only ones to make twelve tricks; the others made nine, ten
or eleven. One unfortunate pair bid
to three diamonds and finished three down. |
