This
is quite a tricky hand for East/West.
There are twenty-four points but no genuine play for any game. Theoretically the best contract is spades;
which would make if both black suits break evenly. As it is spades break 4-2, so to make the spade game, you are
reliant on the defence not playing diamonds.
The same is true of three no trumps and five clubs. However, in four spades and three no
trumps the defence get two chances to play diamonds (in spades there is no
immediate entry to hand after cashing the ace of spades
while, in no trumps, it is possible to use me as an entry but after cashing
the king and queen of spades
there is no way back to the clubs).
So, perhaps the best practical game is five clubs; the defence only
gets one chance to lead
diamonds and, if they don’t, as soon as East gains the lead, declarer can
cash the ace and
king of clubs, unblock
the ace of spades,
cross to dummy with me and discard the losing diamonds on the king and queen of spades. Five of the six pairs played in my suit,
two made ten tricks, one eleven and two twelve but Margaret Glover &
Peter Tyers, the East/West winners, were the only pair to bid and make the
game. The
sixth pair declared three no trumps against Margaret Stone & Alan
Pardoe. Margaret & Alan found the
diamond lead
to take this three down for another top to help them to victory as
North/South. The
