Slam Bidding

Typically there are two distinct phases to an auction leading to a slam.
Board 11 Dealer S Love All	North ª KJT7542 © KT83 ¨ 3 § 3		Firstly, the partnership discovers whether there is enough combined strength in the two hands to allow the possibility of making twelve or thirteen tricks. If so, the second phase of the auction determines the risk of the opponent’s being able to take more than one trick before our twelve tricks can be developed. Bidding techniques during the first phase of the auction include the jump response in a new suit and various conventional responses of two and three no trumps. There are many methods of determining the number of losers including Blackwood, Gerber, and Roman Key Card Blackwood DOPI and ROPI to determine the quantity of aces held by the partnership, bids such as five of the agreed suit or the Grand Slam Force to determine the quality of the trump suit held by the partnership, bids such as the Acol four no trump opening and cue-bids that allow the partnership to determine the specific aces and kings they possess, splinter bids that show a shortage in a specific suit, and asking bids that show two or more losers in a specific suit and ask partner for help. None of the above proved necessary in order to bid seven no trumps on this hand from the Buckby Cup. Tim Glover opened three diamonds, North bid four spades and Peter Neville could count thirteen tricks and had a clear cut seven no trumps. This would have been less easy if South had been able to open a weak two hearts (as occurred at several tables) or if Tim and Peter were playing a style that permitted three diamonds to be opened on a five card suit.
